BOOK OF THE MONTH: The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben
In The Hidden Life of Trees, Peter Wohlleben shares his deep love of woods and forests and explains the amazing processes of life, death, and regeneration he has observed in the woodland and the amazing scientific processes behind the wonders of which we are blissfully unaware.
The Wonder of Birds by Jim Robbins
Birds, Jim Robbins posits, are our most vital connection to nature. They compel us to look to the skies, both literally and metaphorically; draw us out into nature to seek their beauty; and let us experience vicariously what it is like to be weightless. Birds have helped us in so many of our human endeavors: learning to fly, providing clothing and food, and helping us better understand the human brain and body. And they even have much to teach us about being human in the natural world.
The Invention of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt's New World by Andrea Wulf
"Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) ... was the most famous scientist of his age." I have not read this book but it sounds interesting and I would like to learn more about this famous, yet unknown to me, explorer and scientist. Published in 2015, 337 pages, the book has lots of illustrations, an extensive list of Notes and a detailed list of Sources & Bibliography. The link gives more information about the book and has a short video by the author.
Gathering Moss A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses by Robin Wall Kimmerer
Ms. Kimmerer is a professor of environmental biology and the director of the Centre for Native Peoples and the Environment at the State University of New York in Syracuse. She is a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation of Oklahoma. I simply love Robin Wall Kimmerer's prose. This collection of essays is informative, interesting and at least one of the essays was a bit shocking. Gathering Moss was first published in 2003 and has become quite popular in the last couple of years.
