Roller Coaster Ridge Trailhead, San Clemente, CA 92673  map
Join Volunteer Naturalist Karen on a sunset hike in the coastal foothills of San Clemente with some beautiful views of the Dana Point Harbor and Ocean. Stop frequently for a chance to observe wildflowers and wildlife, which may include lupine, poppies, sweet pea, thistle, mustard, caterpillars, roadrunners, coyotes and rabbits. Meet at the trailhead at the end of Camino de los Mares in San Clemente. There is usually plenty of parking on the street. The trail starts with a steep uphill for about 100 feet or so and includes quite a few up and downs throughout the hike. Averaging about 790 foot elevation gain. We can decide how far we all would like to go at the meeting point. Depending on the trails we take we can go longer or shorter. I usually do the 4.5 mile route. It goes through some good dips with more vegetation. There is not too much shade so be aware but we will be starting later in the afternoon so sun shouldn’t be too bad. Carry plenty of food and water. BRING HEADLAMP OR FLASHLIGHT for hiking back to the cars in the dark.
